Russ Ingersoll Class Award

Dartmouth Class of 1960 Presidents Award

The Reverend Russell W. Ingersoll

As an All-American defenseman and captain of a powerhouse Dartmouth hockey team, you were an “impact” player in more ways than one during your undergraduate years. (Once you’d introduced yourself to the top gun for the opposition early in the game, his focus tended to shift from shooting or passing the puck to keeping a nervous eye peeled for Number 14.) All these years later, you’re still an impact player for Dartmouth and the Class of 1960. We’re happy you’re on our side, albeit for very different reasons.

If anyone had asked us what job path you were likely to follow upon graduation, the clergy wouldn’t have been high on the list. In fact, it wouldn’t have made the list at all, but something led you to become an Episcopal priest and then to begin a distinguished career as an educator and prep school headmaster. A great many young men are grateful that’s the path you chose to follow.

And your classmates are grateful, too. As a longtime class agent, you’ve helped us break records raising money for the Dartmouth College Fund – who can say no to a man of the cloth? More importantly, over all these many years you’ve been the classmate to lead us as we’ve gathered in Rollins Chapel at our reunions to recognize and remember those we’ve lost. You fill our hearts and, yes, you make us cry a bit as we say the names of friends who are no longer with us. Now, for nearly a decade, you and Ken Taber have been our Remembrance Officers, writing thoughtful, caring obituaries for classmates as they pass. Not an easy job, but one that means so much, both to their families and to all of us who were their comrades and friends.

Happily, you and your wonderful wife, Pat, are often with us when we come together for Class events.  You two always brighten our gatherings. Here’s to many more good times together!

Russ, for all you’ve done in your service to our Class, and for all you’ve contributed and continue to contribute to our fellowship, we are pleased to honor you with the Class of 1960 Presidents Award.
